Since our last update, one finding reframes everything. New Hanover's own Flock logs show the network was used to search for teenage black males — not a license plate, but people, by age and race. Flock's own system flagged the racial term and blocked it; seconds later the same search ran with "black" removed and was allowed. In Flock's own data it's labeled objectClass: people. That's the point most people miss: this is not just a "license plate reader." It can hunt for human beings by description. The county redacted who ran it, so we can't tell you who — only that it happened, on the network our taxes pay for.

This is why "it only reads plates" doesn't hold — and why communities are walking away. In the mountains, Macon County just voted to pull its cameras entirely. It can be done here.

What matters now: the New Hanover County Commissioners meet Monday, August 17, and public comment is where these decisions turn. If you can do one thing:
