Earlier this year, I received a speeding ticket from an automated speed enforcement (ASE) camera in York Region—on the way to my father’s funeral.

The signage was inconsistent and partially obstructed, making it nearly impossible to know the proper speed. Even worse, the appeal process was broken: it didn’t allow new evidence, yet dismissed my original evidence as “insufficient.” When I pushed for fairness, the Region admitted the sign was “fleetingly obstructed”—but refused to fix it or the appeals process.

I’ve been fighting this for months. I’m not alone—many drivers in York Region have received unfair tickets due to poor signage and no real way to challenge them. These cameras are meant to promote safety, not trap drivers or generate revenue.

We’re calling on York Region and the Province of Ontario to:

Ensure all speed and camera signage is fully visible and consistent
Fix the flawed tribunal process that blocks fair evidence
Reconsider these ASE cameras if fairness can’t be guaranteed

Premier Ford himself has criticized these cameras as “cash grabs.” This is a textbook case. Let’s demand accountability, transparency, and safer—not sneakier—roads.
