The Issue
My 5-year-old son, Shine Bickham, was physically abused by his kindergarten teacher, Ms. Erin Byrd, at Holiman Elementary in San Angelo. During what should have been a normal school day, Ms. Byrd hit Shine in the mouth with a ruler, leaving his lip swollen, busted, and bloody. This act of violence against my child is not only unacceptable but a blatant violation of the trust every parent places in the school system to protect and nurture our children.
Despite this clear evidence of abuse, neither the Principal, Ms. Fisher, nor the San Angelo School District took any action to address the incident or ensure the safety of Shine and other students in Ms. Byrd’s classroom. By failing to intervene, they have not only allowed this abuse to remain unpunished but have also left the door open for further incidents to occur against other defenseless children.
Shine and all students within the San Angelo Independent School District (SAISD) deserve justice and a safe learning environment. It is imperative that immediate steps are taken to hold Ms. Byrd accountable for her actions. First and foremost, Ms. Byrd should be removed from her position and prevented from continuing to work with children in any capacity. Additionally, an independent investigation should be launched to review her conduct and determine whether other children have been harmed under her care.
Furthermore, the school district must implement mandatory training for teachers and school staff on child protection and appropriate disciplinary methods to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. This includes reviewing and updating current policies to ensure immediate and appropriate response to any allegations of abuse.
The safety, well-being, and dignity of our children should always be the top priority of any educational institution. By signing this petition, you join me in demanding justice for Shine and all young boys and girls who deserve to learn in a safe environment. Let's hold those in power accountable and create a more secure future for our children. Please sign and share this petition to make a difference.
