Remove Employment Barriers for Non-Violent Citizens

Remove Employment Barriers for Non-Violent Citizens
The Issue
Because shielding records, expungements and pardons for non-violent offenders will allow more citizens to become employed and move above the poverty line.
Because policy reform can help citizens with criminal records who are Ready, Willing but Unable to work to become employed.
Because families, children and communities suffer when citizens don't work.
Because employed citizens pay more taxes and fees, buy homes and support the economy and are less likely to recidivate.
Because tens of thousands of citizens with criminal records are dependent upon public assistance for life.
Because citizens with criminal records are often more motivated and more committed employees.
Because public safety increases as employment rates increase.
Because public access to criminal records does more harm than good.
I support:
Removing barriers to employment for individuals with non-violent criminal records so that:
• Maryland citizens with criminal backgrounds can begin supporting themselves, their families, their children and community.
• Marylanders with criminal records will have the opportunity to seek employment based on skill sets, education and experience.
• Maryland will increase revenue by collecting more money and spending less.
