Remove Destin City Councilwoman Herbert from office
The Issue
In the heart of our beloved community of Destin, Florida, we find ourselves at a crossroads of justice and integrity. Recently, Destin City Councilwoman Herbert was involved in an incident that shakes the very foundations of trust we place in our elected officials. She was arrested after taking a man's vehicle at a boat ramp and, shockingly, berated him, claiming her status as a city councilwoman as a reason. Her time is more important than our rights.
This is more than just a personal grievance; it is a glaring example of entitlement and abuse of power that cannot be tolerated. The fact that she felt empowered to openly admit to the police that she acted this way because the man in question was "taking too long” is profoundly concerning. It sends a message that her rights, due to her position, supersede those of ordinary citizens – folks like you and I who elected her to serve, not to rule.
Moreover, our trust has been further eroded by the silence and non-responsiveness of city officials. While the Mayor of Destin posts accolades on social media about our city council's performance, crucial matters like this remain unanswered. Emails regarding substantial tax hikes – from $20,000 and upwards, resulting in unfair financial pressure from myself as well as the “privatization of the entire coastline even though we the tax payers coughed up the money to repair it yesrs ago, and years ago thr Florida Supreme Court ruled on the matter and there’s no grey areas, it’s all on fla.gov. But all those go unanswered surely tho. the mayor takes more of his famous victory laps about new laws that were passed Which im unsure it even covered Destin but it was supposed to fix the hostile takeovers of our beaches. On Facebook he again touted them as if he had anything to do with those laws, and things have only got worse since those “laws” he bragged about were put in place. Which never needed to be to begin with. This highlights a pattern of disregard for the very people they are supposed to represent and a total lack of enforcing the laws on the books evenly and without discrimination as our real laws make clear.
It is imperative that swift action be taken. We are calling for a public vote to determine if Councilwoman Herbert is fit to continue in her position, or for the Governor of Florida to intervene and remove her altogether. Every decision she has voted on should be scrutinized for potential bias and conflict of interest, and the council itself including the mayor.
This is not just about holding one individual accountable, but about restoring integrity in our governance and ensuring that the voices of Destin's citizens are respected and heard. If we allow this to go unchecked, we invite further injustices and erode the foundation of trust necessary between a community and its leaders.
Join us in demanding accountability and ethical behavior from our officials. Sign this petition to restore dignity and transparency to Destin's leadership and ensure that justice prevails for all of us. Your voice matters.
