The Issue

I attend Ooltewah High School, and like many other students here, I have been subjected to unnecessary searches simply for being late to class. It's a pattern of behavior that many of us have had to endure for far too long. When I first entered this school, I never expected to be targeted based on assumptions and unfair biases, but this has become a grim reality.

Our dean has consistently overstepped his professional boundaries by regularly searching students unnecessarily, most often targeting minority students, particularly Black students or those associated with them. This invasive and discriminatory behavior is not only uncomfortable but also deeply damaging to those who are subject to it. The dean's actions go beyond mere searching. He waits outside restrooms, watches students as they enter and exit, and has even gone as far as entering female restrooms accompanied by a female admin. Such actions have not only made us feel unsafe but are also inappropriate and unprofessional in an educational environment.

This misuse of power is a clear violation of the trust and safety that students should have in their school. Instead of supporting and focusing on our academic needs, the dean prioritizes these intrusive measures. This situation undermines the educational atmosphere and creates an environment of fear and discomfort.

We have taken our concerns to the head dean of the school, yet no substantial action has been taken. Our voices need to be heard, and change needs to happen. It's time for the school administration to take these concerns seriously and address the behavior of this dean, whose actions have gone unaddressed for far too long.

We call upon the Ooltewah High School administration to recognize the seriousness of this situation and take immediate action to relieve this dean of his duties. Ensuring the safety and comfort of all students should be their utmost priority. Together, we can create a learning environment where all students feel safe, valued, and free from the fear of unfair treatment.

Sign this petition to stand against misuse of power and to support a fair and respectful educational environment for everyone at Ooltewah High School.
