In the past decade, both Memphis, Tennessee and Southaven, Mississippi, have seen a troubling increase in the number of data centers being constructed within our communities. As a resident who deeply cares about the future of our cities and the health of our families, I am compelled to write this because these data centers pose severe risks to our local resources, infrastructure, and well-being.

Data centers are notorious for their extensive water consumption and pollution. These facilities use millions of gallons of water annually to cool their servers, depleting our precious water reserves and threatening the availability of clean water for our households. The strain on our water systems is evident, and it jeopardizes everything from household use to the maintenance of community parks and wildlife reserves.

Beyond the water crisis, there's a concern for environmental pollution. Data centers often rely on backup generators powered by diesel, releasing dangerous pollutants into the air. This contributes to air pollution, increases cancer risks, especially in children and the elderly, and degrades our quality of life. We risk turning our vibrant communities into industrial zones, dominated by pollution, fumes, and cancer-triggering emissions.

Economically, while these data centers promise jobs, the reality is they often bring fewer employment opportunities than expected, benefitting large corporations at the expense of community health and local businesses that could have used that land more sustainably.

It is therefore crucial for our civic leaders and city planners to prioritize sustainable development practices that protect our natural resources and our health. Let's invest in green technology, support local businesses, and develop infrastructure that benefits everyone, not just the profit margins of tech giants.

We, the people of Memphis and Southaven, must stand together to demand the removal and halt of any future construction of these intrusive data centers. Let our voices be heard that our communities are places for families—not repositories for data.
