Remove Danica Patrick as Formula 1 Commentator on Sky Sports

We, the undersigned, call on Sky Sports to remove Danica Patrick from her role as a Formula 1 commentator. As a prominent figure in motorsport and a key voice on Sky Sports’ F1 coverage, it is essential that commentators uphold the inclusive, diverse, and politically neutral values that Formula 1 represents. Danica Patrick’s open support for Donald Trump and the MAGA movement in the 2024 US Elections is fundamentally at odds with these values.

Danica Patrick, a former professional racing driver and current Formula 1 commentator on Sky Sports, has publicly declared her support for Donald Trump and the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement during the 2024 US Elections. We believe that this alignment with MAGA is incompatible with the core values of both Formula 1 and Sky Sports, and we urge her removal from the broadcast team.

Formula 1, alongside the FIA, has made substantial strides in promoting inclusion, diversity, and equality across the sport through initiatives like #WeRaceAsOne. This campaign is central to F1’s mission of fostering a sport that is welcoming to all, regardless of race, gender, or background.

In contrast, the MAGA movement, with which Danica Patrick has publicly aligned herself, fosters a divisive rhetoric, anti-immigrant sentiments, and policies that marginalize minorities and vulnerable communities. These positions stand in direct opposition to Formula 1's progressive stance on diversity and inclusion.

As fans, we believe that a commentator representing such views cannot appropriately reflect the ethos of a global, inclusive sport like Formula 1. Allowing Ms. Patrick to continue in this role undermines the sport’s efforts to promote equality, both on and off the track.

Formula 1 has been actively working to promote and support women in motorsport through initiatives like the F1 Academy, a programme specifically designed to develop female talent in racing. This represents a forward-thinking approach that seeks to empower and elevate women in a male-dominated sport.

However, the MAGA movement offers a notoriously regressive stance on women’s rights, particularly in areas like reproductive rights, gender equality, and representation. Ms. Patrick’s alignment with this ideology sends a damaging message to female fans and aspiring female drivers who look up to role models in the sport. Formula 1 should be a space where women feel empowered, supported, and respected—values that the MAGA movement does not uphold.

For Formula 1 to continue its positive momentum in supporting women, it is imperative that the voices representing the sport on major platforms like Sky Sports embody these principles.

As a prominent commentator, her very public political endorsements (flaunted on her social media channels, which garner nearly 1 million followers) influence the public perception of the sport and her global platform on Sky Sports, and have the potential to alienate a significant portion of the global fanbase. 

Sky Sports has a responsibility to its viewers to ensure that those representing the sport embody its values of equality, diversity, and neutrality. Danica Patrick’s open support for the MAGA movement is in direct conflict with Formula 1’s commitment to inclusion and the empowerment of women.

We urge Sky Sports to take immediate action and remove Danica Patrick from her role as a Formula 1 commentator. Formula 1 fans deserve commentators who reflect the sport’s values, not individuals whose political affiliations undermine the progress being made toward a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all.
