Remove dangerous highway access points at Gerber and Hendersonville
The Issue
On February 8, 2025, just 3 days after his 44th birthday, my brother was tragically killed due to hazardous road conditions at around the 100 Block of Gerber Road and Hendersonville Road. He was struck by a driver making an illegal left turn from a highway access point. Heartbreakingly, this fatal collision was not an isolated incident. Since his passing, there have been multiple motorcycle fatalities within a 20-foot radius of this exact location, all stemming from similar circumstances.
These recurrent tragedies highlight a critical, ongoing safety hazard that demands immediate intervention. The primary danger stems from the highway access points located near the 100 block of Gerber Road and Hendersonville Road, specifically the exits from Gerber Village near the Five Guys restaurant. The entries and exits on both sides of this highway create severe blind spots. It is nearly impossible for exiting vehicles to see approaching traffic—particularly motorcyclists—in time to avoid collisions, a risk heavily compounded by drivers executing illegal turns.
Viable and significantly safer alternative routes already exist. Motorists can easily utilize the traffic lights situated at either end of this corridor, such as those near the urgent care center or the primary Gerber Village intersection. Rerouting traffic through these controlled, predictable intersections would vastly improve road safety and drastically reduce the potential for further accidents. These established routes are far more sensible for the safety of all commuters, whether they are driving cars or riding motorcycles.
The stakes are simply too high to wait for another tragedy. Motorcyclists remain uniquely vulnerable to poorly designed roadways, and no family should have to endure the loss of a loved one due to preventable infrastructural hazards.
By signing this petition, we demand that local authorities take immediate action to either remove or drastically modify these dangerous access points, effectively eliminating illegal turns and improving roadway visibility. It is time to prioritize and safeguard the lives of our community members.
Please sign this petition to demand meaningful change and help prevent future loss of life on our roads.
