For too long, the legacy of Cesar Chavez has overshadowed the contributions and sacrifices of his contemporaries, particularly those of Dolores Huerta. As an organization that empowers communities to lead the charge in building a stronger, more inclusive California, California Rising finds it imperative to use our collective voices, and demand our public leaders help rectify our historical narrative and correct the injustices faced by women like Dolores Huerta. By renaming the buildings, streets and holidays currently honoring Cesar Chavez to honor Dolores Huerta instead, we acknowledge the powerful contributions she made in advocating for labor rights and empowering marginalized communities.

Cesar Chavez, while a prominent figure in labor rights activism, has a history that includes negative impacts on children and women. A comprehensive examination of his role reveals actions and decisions that have led to trauma and inequity, issues that ought to be addressed and discussed openly. By prioritizing Dolores Huerta’s legacy, we pave the way for a more inclusive understanding of our history.

Dolores Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers (UFW) and played a crucial role in advocating for workers' rights, setting a foundation for the fair treatment of laborers. Her rallying cry of 'Sí, se puede' (Yes, we can) has inspired countless activists and movements across various social justice sectors. Unlike Chavez, Huerta has always worked inclusively, uplifting women and children and ensuring their voices are heard and respected. By renaming these spaces after her, we honor not just her achievements but also the countless others who have been overlooked or marginalized.
