Balboa Park - previously referred to as the "Jewel of San Diego" - is no longer a jewel. 

The campers who reside in the Park have changed the experience of the many who use and live by the Park, for the worse. 

A high percentage of the Park's homeless are living with untreated schizophrenia and related psychosis spectrum disorders, and/or drug addiction. This sizable sub-population is the saddest to observe but is frequently the most threatening and disturbing to be around. These mentally ill people have a great need for medical treatment, but first, have to be taken off the street, and out of the Park, for life saving care to take place.

However, due to their serious mental illness that has rendered them unable to recognize they are sick by hijacking their decision-making capacity, they are not accepting shelter and supportive services. 

To help this group most in need, compassionate involuntary care is necessary. To start this process, they need to be removed from the Park and entered  into medical treatment. 

We, the undersigned, request the City of San Diego enforce the present laws already in place (CA Penal Code 647 (e); SD Municipal Code 63.0102 (b) (12)) making it illegal to camp in a city park. In doing so, those homeless with schizophrenia, drug addiction, and other brain related disorders, have a chance for recovery.
