Concerned residents of Bexar County Texas:

The reason you are reading this is to inform you about a critical issue concerning our community's safety that affects each and every resident of Bexar County.  I have talked with many current deputies of the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office who wish to make a petition such as this one but are afraid of retaliation from the current Sheriff for doing so, so I am filing it on their behalf.  Your support in addressing this matter is critical.

As residents of Bexar County we entrust our elected law enforcement officials with the responsibility to uphold the law and protect our well-being.  However it has come to our attention that Sheriff Javier Salazar has consistently failed to perform those duties that he took an oath to uphold and therefore continues endangering the lives of every citizen and visitor of Bexar County regardless of status, wealth, or area of the county where you reside and work.  Some of the specific instances include, but are limited to:

·         There have been at least 99 (at the time of this writing) questionable in-custody deaths that have occurred in the Bexar County Jail under Sheriff Salazar’s watch.

·         Over $75 million of your hard earned tax dollars has been spent on overtime in the jail alone (overtime for law enforcement personnel is not included in that total) due to mismanagement by the Sheriff.

·         An excessively high turnover rate of more than 2,000 deputies.  They have resigned since he has been Sheriff, caused by low morale, poor supervision and job dissatisfaction.

·         Sheriff Salazar will not accept many criminally charged individuals into the jail and is highly selective of those who he does allow.  On February 4th 2025 it was reported by News 4 SA that Sheriff Salazar did not permit Geronimo Campos to be booked in jail under an arrest warrant for murder.  If he won’t accept murderers into the jail what is law enforcement supposed to do with them when they catch them?  Perhaps Salazar would prefer to have them roaming the streets to seek out their next victim?

.           On August 21st 2024, Sheriff Salazar took to the stage at Democratic National Convention where he made divisive statements and told lies of being a border Sheriff, stated that Kamala Harris went to Mexico and arrested traffickers and also stated that President Donald Trump was against law enforcement (all proven lies).  Our elected Sheriff is supposed to be for ALL the people, not just his political party of choice.

·         On January 28th 2025, Sheriff Salazar appeared on a CNN segment where he told reporters that he was going to oppose enforcing deportation orders from Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), thereby sending a clear message to illegal immigrants how they can get around being deported.  Salazar commented that he wanted them to feel comfortable contacting him for help.  That act alone can be considered hindering/aiding fugitives from justice, which happens to be an arrestable offense.

.           On February 17th 2025, Sheriff Salazar took part of a “town hall” meeting that was not open to the public and once again pleaded with illegal immigrants to reach out to him for help stating that his investigators are well trained in filling out U-Visa’s, which will allow them to stay in America rather than being deported for violating the laws of our land.  Salazar referenced that the illegal’s that were sent to Martha’s Vineyard were still here in the country because of him.  He once again stated that he would not help ICE more than he was legally obligated to do.

In light of these concerns (and there are many more not listed here), we have initiated this petition calling for the removal of Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar from office. This action is in accordance with Chapter 87 of the Texas Local Government Code, which allows for the removal of county officers under circumstances of incompetency or official misconduct.

We request your support for a return to well-being by signing this petition. Your signature will amplify our collective voice and demonstrate our community's commitment to safety and effective leadership.

Thank you for your attention to this pressing matter. Together, we can work towards a safer and more accountable community.
