This recent ban on drinking and socialising on local median strips is removing a key part of our local culture. The ability to congregate and socialise freely in these areas is an essential part of what makes Melbourne such a great city. In a post-Covid world, putting restrictions on these sorts of activities is harmful to local businesses which people are trying to support and also to a broader sense of community and culture in our city.

Enjoying a drink with your friends on the median is an iconic part of living or visiting the inner north and the 29 signatures on the original petition do not wholly reflect the values or experiences of the people who live and socialise in this area.

Installing public toilets, bins, and other social infrastructure will remedy the alleged problems and encourage more business in the local economy and more connection among the people of this lovely city.

We hope the support of this petition will encourage  the Yarra City Council to remove the ban and support these activities.
