As a member of the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) community and someone with family and friends directly affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, I find it deeply unsettling to see Artyom Duda, a Russian player, being part of our university's hockey team, while also not being a student at the university. This is not about targeting an individual based on nationality but rather about standing up for justice and peace. The current situation in Ukraine has resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and countless more displaced from their homes. It feels wrong to ignore this reality while welcoming a representative from Russia, who has played in military based hockey club prior to this, into our sports teams. We believe that TMU should take a stand against this conflict by removing Artyom Duda from the hockey team until there is resolution and peace restored between Russia and Ukraine.
