TLDR: The 80 plus big white letters on Utah's mountains are tacky and we should get rid of them. Hiking to them is not even fun.

The United States mountain west is blessed with unparalleled natural beauty. This same beauty we all claim to revere is plagued by man's impulse to deface what is beautiful. Nowhere in Utah is this more apparent than the trend of hillside letters. Utah's beautiful caramel, olive, and ochre hillsides are scourged with more than 80 (source) of these unnatural eyesores. It is well past time that we do something about the problem.

The letters serve no purpose. They do not assist in air navigation. Almost all of them were built for sports rivalries or as part of an early 1900s meme (source). We have outgrown the need for them.
