The Issue
Arkansas Tech University’s use of AI-generated images for advertisements on platforms like Facebook and Instagram has sparked significant opposition from students and faculty. These images fail to reflect the true accomplishments and identity of our community. Additionally, departments featured in these campaigns were not consulted, and many oppose being depicted this way.
We propose that ATU’s marketing team prioritize real photos that authentically showcase the educational environment and achievements of our campus. Here’s why:
- AI images lack the genuine connection that real photos of ATU’s community would provide.
- Real photos highlight the true accomplishments of students and faculty. AI photos are shallow in comparison.
- Real images show ATU’s diversity and individuality more accurately.
- AI images mislead and harm trust in the university’s message.
- Using real photos creates opportunities for campus photographers. Students could gain career readiness if the university’s marketing department worked with them to create an ad campaign.
