The Issue
Living on 5th Ave NE in Shoreline, WA has become increasingly challenging for residents like me. Our home only accommodates a one-car driveway and a single garage, where we store our motorcycles due to security concerns. In recent months, we have experienced alarming incidents of theft, including the theft of our motorcycle covers. Even more distressingly, the safety of our neighborhood has been compromised by a noticeable increase in vehicular accidents.
The existing bike lane on 5th Ave NE, while well-intentioned, has inadvertently contributed to road safety issues and reduced street parking options for residents. My boyfriend's red BMW was tragically totaled by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel, and two of our friends' cars were hit by a drunk driver, ending up on our neighbor's front lawn. These incidents have highlighted the urgent need to reevaluate the current road configuration for the safety and well-being of everyone in our community.
Removing the bike lane, which is only about 100 feet long in front of our house, can alleviate the chronic shortage of street parking spaces for residents who need it most. Without sufficient parking, residents are forced to park in less secure areas, increasing the risk of vehicle break-ins and accidents. Additionally, by restoring parking availability, we can potentially reduce congestion and improve traffic flow on this busy road.
This petition calls on local leaders and city planners in Shoreline to reconsider the placement of the bike lane on 5th Ave NE, seeking a solution that balances the needs of cyclists with the safety and convenience of residents. Other streets or alternate routes could be explored to better accommodate all road users without compromising resident security.
Sign this petition to urge the Shoreline city council to take immediate action in restoring safe and secure street parking for all 5th Ave NE residents.
