Removal of Statue at Biola University

Removal of Statue at Biola University
The Issue
The statue outside Bardwell Hall has raised concerns among students and faculty. Many feel it is unattractive, out of place, and misaligned with Biola’s Christian identity. Though some initially assumed it had Christian meaning, the central feature is actually a Tibetan Buddhist prayer wheel, an object apart from Christian faith and practice. Why is a statue promoting Buddhist symbolism on a campus dedicated to following Christ?
If the statue remains, it may continue to create confusion about what Biola stands for. A growing number of students and community members believe it does not belong in a space intended to reflect shared Christian beliefs.
We recognize that the statue was a donated piece and that the university may want to honor its relationship with the architect and donor. But is preserving that relationship more important than staying true to the values that define Biola? Respectful conversations and thoughtful action can honor both our commitments and our convictions.
Please join us in asking the university to remove the statue.
