Currently we have trending situations at West Valley Mid-level and High School campuses that allow all students to use either the boy or girls restroom or locker room. This means girls can use girl or boy bathroom/locker rooms, and boys can use girl or boy bathroom/locker rooms. Now the state is requiring every public school district to adopt a policy demonstrating how each district is gender inclusive. My boys are not interested in changing and using the restroom with girls and my girls are not interested in changing and using the restroom with boys. This is inappropriate, unacceptable, and unsafe for our students, regardless of their gender identity or expression.

We are proposing a solution: We remodel the existing gendered bathrooms at the HS to be all-inclusive bathrooms, where each stall is its own separate room, wall to wall, floor to ceiling, with locking doors. When you exit this new all inclusive stall, you enter an area that is open to hallways and the sink area, where the wall is the height of the sinks. There are no corners in these new restrooms, no place for bullying, promiscuous behavior, drugs or abuse. After researching what other districts across the country are doing to solve the same trending challenges, remodeling or building all inclusive bathrooms is solving almost all of these problems. 

According to research done on the cost to remodel the 5 existing bathrooms at WVHS, it will be ~$2 million. This is a large number. However, thanks to the job well done by our District personnel and Bond Oversight Committee in overseeing both Apple Valley & Summitview Elementary, there are excess funds available.

Here's where you come in, we'd like your signature demonstrating support in using a portion of the excess funds to go towards funding the remodel of our HS bathrooms. We fully acknowledge, customarily, any excess funds would be returned to the taxpayers. However, the current need is necessitating action and funding, and we feel these excess funds will impact our community best when committed to this project.

If we don't get these funds, we will be left to fundraise to make this project happen. Why not take advantage of existing capital for this proposed solution to a very real issue in our district designed to ensure the safety of ALL STUDENTS?
