As I walked away from the gates of our local sixth form college, where I had been talking to 18 year olds, most of whom want to stay in the EU, I suddenly became very angry about my generation. What right have we, with our jobs, houses and pensions to take the EU away from the young with their whole lives ahead of them. The older generation were quick enough to send the young to the front to die in two world wars, now it's time for us to give back. And oldies, don't think it's because they don't understand the issues. They understand far better than many older people that sovereignty is a many layered thing, from local, through regional, country, nation-state, supranational to global. They feel that they are global citizens as well as British citizens. Brexit reinforces the dominance of the Westminster elite, who are as likely to overrule Lancastrians who don't want fracking as to resent the EU for giving us workers' rights, consumer protection and environmental legislation or "Brussels red tape" as they call it. So oldies, if you can't bear to vote Remain, then let the young decide and Abstain.
