We, the residents and business owners of New Glasgow, are calling for the relocation of Viola’s Place Emergency Shelter currently located at 189 Marsh Street.

This petition is not about ending support for vulnerable individuals. We fully support the continued operation of a homeless shelter within our community. Our goal is to ensure that these services are delivered in a location that is safe, appropriate, and beneficial for everyone involved: residents, businesses, and clients of the shelter.

Why This Matters
Since the shelter was established in its current downtown location, New Glasgow has experienced a significant increase in safety concerns, crime, and disturbances in the surrounding area. These incidents have impacted families, local workers, visitors, and small businesses who rely on a safe and welcoming environment to thrive.
Recent events, including trespassing, drug use on private properties, vandalism, and assaults, have made it clear that the existing location is no longer suitable for the needs of the community or the individuals the shelter aims to serve. Downtown New Glasgow is a small, high-traffic area with many businesses, apartments, seniors, and families who are directly affected by these ongoing issues.

Our Goal
We are advocating for:
 - Relocating the shelter to a safer, more appropriate area within Pictou County.
 - Maintaining the service, ensuring those who rely on emergency housing still receive the support they need.
 - A transparent discussion and recorded vote by New Glasgow Town Council confirming the community’s desire for relocation.

This petition is intended to show a unified, community-driven request for action. Relocating the shelter will allow downtown New Glasgow to regain safety and stability while ensuring vulnerable individuals continue receiving proper support in a location designed for their needs.

What We Are Asking From Council
We ask that New Glasgow Town Council place a motion on record stating that:
The current location of the shelter is not suitable, and
Council supports and will advocate for relocating the service to a safer, more appropriate location.
