Relocate Homeless Shelter Away from Schools in Fairhaven

Relocate Homeless Shelter Away from Schools in Fairhaven
The Issue
The current location of the homeless shelter (Emergency Wellness Centre) in Fairhaven, Saskatoon is causing concern among the community due to its proximity to local schools. Unfortunately, many of the people that use homeless shelters are struggling with mental health and/or drug addiction issues and can be unpredictable and children should not share a park with people that are openly using drugs daily.
Since the shelter opened there have been altercations, countless needles, a gun, knives, a machete, crack pipes, public exposure and many encampments found on school grounds and/or in the park. It is approximately 600 meters from the shelter to Fairhaven and St. Mark schools and across a parking lot from the shelter is the park that these schools sit on (exactly 234 meters). In addition, its only 400 meters from a YMCA Childcare Centre. On February 28th Saskatoon city council voted 8-2 in favor of keeping shelters at least 250 meters away from any elementary schools, this is not far enough for children's safety and leaves the children in Fairhaven at risk. This distance needs to be adjusted to be outside of residential areas.
While it's crucial that we provide support for our homeless population, it's equally important that we ensure the safety and well-being of our children. We propose relocating this shelter to an area within Saskatoon that is more suitable and less disruptive for everyone involved. By doing so, we can continue supporting our vulnerable populations without compromising on child safety. Please sign this petition if you believe in creating a safer environment for all children while still advocating for those who are less fortunate.
