Relocate Governor Austin Blair's Grave to a More Honorable Site

The Issue

As a regular visitor to Governor Austin Blair's grave at Mt. Evergreen Cemetery, I have seen firsthand the disheartening conditions that surround this great man's final resting place. The cemetery teems with homeless people and drug addicts using the site unsuitably. This distressing sight deeply affects those of us who care for Michigan's historical heritage and want to see the respect restored to the grave of this significant civil rights advocate and Civil War governor.

Governor Austin Blair is a symbol of resilience and strong principles. He is remembered as a distinguished public servant, contributing immensely to Michigan and its people throughout his tenure as governor during the Civil War. Under his stewardship, Michigan was one of the foremost states in defending Union ideals, offering troops, equipment, and resources. He also vigorously advocated against slavery and worked to secure rights for African Americans. This legacy deserves a worthy resting place.

We respectfully request that the grave of Governor Austin Blair be moved from the part of Mt. Evergreen Cemetery to beneath his statue in front of the Michigan State Capitol building. This would serve as a more significant and dignified tribute to his extraordinary life and contributions. We urge those in authority to take immediate action to preserve and honor the legacy of Governor Austin Blair.

Please join me in petitioning for this important cause. By signing this petition, you will be contributing to the restoration of dignity to Governor Austin Blair's final resting place, and paying respect to a key architect of Michigan's history.
