As alumni of the university that prides itself on being the number one authority on questioning authority, we cannot stand by while our university quashes dissent with police force. On May 31st, 2024, students at UC Santa Cruz were peacefully protesting in solidarity with Palestine when they were unjustly arrested. These students were exercising their right to free speech and assembly—rights that should be protected, not punished.

UC Santa Cruz has a long history of activism and standing up for what is right. It is unacceptable for the administration to respond to peaceful protests with arrests. We must support our students and call for their safe and immediate release.
