LEGO fans everywhere have been anticipating a massive fan game for the past 8 years called "BIONICLE: Masks of Power." As of May 17th, 2025, that game has been cancelled by The LEGO Group. 

The game's developers, Team Kanohi, have always abided by The LEGO Group's Fair Play guidelines for fan projects and were intending to release a free demo on August 10th, 2025, called the "FREE THE BAND" demo. But now,  LEGO has decided to shut down the project without providing a clear answer as to why. Team Kanohi speculates it is because the quality of their free fan game "was too easy to mistake for an official product."

LEGO BIONICLE fans have been denied official new products of the beloved IP from LEGO for nearly ten years now. "BIONICLE: Masks of Power" was a polished, robust game made by fans for fans, and it would've been new content for longtime fans to enjoy during this decade-long dry spell.

If LEGO can just pull the plug on a quality fan project that was close to a free release, then how can fans place any hope in LEGO's policies? Now is the time to request that LEGO and Team Kanohi make the "FREE THE BAND" demo available to the public immediately, for free. Team Kanohi has stated that the demo was 3 months away from completion, but what they have completed so far will more than suffice.
