The Issue

Thirty years ago, Sylvester Lowry was convicted of a burglary charge in York County, South Carolina. He was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole, plus an additional eight-year sentence to be served after the life sentence. Importantly, no one was harmed during the incident that resulted in these severe charges.

Sylvester has spent three decades behind bars with an exemplary record, earning only a single write-up in all that time, and it was for disrespect. This speaks volumes of his character and behavior while incarcerated. He is a man who has demonstrated rehabilitation and has shown a continuous commitment to living peacefully.

This cause is personally significant to me because Mrs Lowry exemplified kindness and care by allowing me to place my husband's ashes on his front porch. This act of compassion meant so much; it gave me solace knowing my husband's ashes were guarding the doorway, a symbol of peace and protection.

It is time to reconsider Sylvester Lowry's life sentence, which was heartbreakingly severe given the nature of his crime. As citizens who seem to call for justice not just in punishment, but also in mercy and rehabilitation, we should urge the court and the Governor of South Carolina to reevaluate his case.

By releasing Sylvester, we acknowledge not only his transformation but also set a precedent for a more just and humane sentencing system. We must allow those who demonstrate genuine rehabilitation the chance to reintegrate into society.

I urge you to sign this petition, seeking clemency for Sylvester Lowry. Let's support a fair and just legal system that recognizes when enough is enough. Your signature can help reunite a man with his community and family, giving him the opportunity for a life outside the prison walls.
