The Issue

Mario Guevara is a journalist. A father. A voice for the Atlanta-area Spanish-speaking community.

And he is currently being held in ICE detention—not for any crime, but for doing his job: covering protests and livestreaming law enforcement actions in public.

Guevara was arrested while wearing a vest marked “PRESS” and filming a peaceful protest in June. All criminal charges against him have since been dismissed. A judge even granted him bond—but ICE is still holding him, and the government is fighting to keep him behind bars.

His reporting—on immigration raids, community protests, and police activity—has drawn thousands of followers. Now it appears to be the very reason he’s being punished.

Lawyers argue that ICE’s actions are a violation of his First Amendment rights and an attempt to silence a journalist critical of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. Public records show the government’s case against him relies almost entirely on his reporting—not on actual wrongdoing.

This is not how democracy works.

We are calling on ICE and the Department of Homeland Security to release Mario Guevara immediately!

Mario Guevara has lived in the U.S. for over 20 years. He has no criminal record. He is eligible for a green card and is widely recognized as a vital voice in his community.
