Shadow, a male black leopard arrived at the Peninsula SPCA in Newport News, VA in 1999 when he was only 3 weeks old. Rather than seeking a suitable environment for the big cat, the shelter made him a permanent resident of their makeshift petting zoo (tickets $2), in a concrete and chain-link cage, near the outdoor dog kennels.
Shadow is advertised as a highlight in their summer camp program ($140 per week) for children to touch and feed! Fortunately, he has been offered a retirement home at the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado - an offer that includes costs and transportation. The shelter only has to accept the offer to give Shadow a new life, but after five months, they still haven't.
Every day they spend sitting on the offer is a day less for Shadow to enjoy the remainder of his life in an expansive natural leopard habitat. Shadow has given most of his life to the shelter, who should now grant his freedom so that he can know the feeling of grass under his feet and the company of his own kind before he leaves this world.
Please join me in asking the Peninsula SPCA to release Shadow to a sanctuary, immediately!
