My son is currently held in custody over an incident that we firmly believe falls under the realm of true self-defense. This is not just a legal issue but one that deeply affects the life and future of a loving individual. His rights are being overlooked despite Texas having self-defense laws specifically to protect those like him, who had no choice but to defend themselves in a dangerous situation in which he was never the aggressor but in imminent danger and in fear of his life. 

Texas has long been recognized for its clear and firm stance on self-defense, enshrined in the "Stand Your Ground" laws. These laws allow individuals to protect themselves against threats without the duty to retreat, provided they are in a place where they have a right to be. Our case aligns perfectly with these provisions, yet my son remains in custody as though he has committed a crime; this is not only unjust but also a misapplication of the law.

Every day my son spends in custody is a day lost from his education, employment opportunities, and life experiences that shape a young adult. He is at a pivotal age where every single moment is instrumental to his growth and future prospects. Holding him responsible for an act of self-defense sets a dangerous precedent where individuals might hesitate to protect themselves out of fear of legal repercussions.

We urge the legal authorities in Texas to take a closer look at this case, apply the state's self-defense principles fairly, and release my son from custody. By allowing this situation to continue, a grave injustice is perpetuated upon a young man who simply acted to preserve his safety.
