The Issue

Misha Verbitsky is a distinguished mathematician, known internationally for his work in differential and algebraic geometry, and a vocal critic of Russia's war in Ukraine. He has recently been arrested in Armenia at the request of Russian authorities on charges of "supporting terrorism" — a charge that Russian courts have routinely applied to antiwar activists, journalists, and dissidents in order to silence political opposition.

If extradited to Russia, Verbitsky faces a lengthy prison term under a justice system that offers defendants in politically motivated cases no meaningful protection or fair trial.

We, the undersigned — mathematicians, academics, and concerned citizens — urge the Armenian government to recognize Misha Verbitsky as a political refugee and grant him asylum, thereby preventing his extradition to Russia.

Armenia has the legal authority and the moral standing to act. Granting asylum would affirm Armenia's commitment to the rule of law and to the protection of individuals from politically motivated persecution.
