Why this petition matters

Mehraj Malik is not just an ordinary citizen – he is a youth leader, an elected MLA, and the State President of the Aam Aadmi Party in Jammu and Kashmir. For over 16 years, he has tirelessly served the people, raising his voice for justice, equality, and the rights of the marginalized. His honesty and commitment to democracy have made him a symbol of hope for thousands across the region.

On 8th September 2025, Mehraj Malik was unjustly detained under the draconian Public Safety Act (PSA) and sent to Kathua Jail. The PSA allows detention without trial for up to two years – a blatant violation of human rights and democratic principles.

Why we must act
The PSA has long been criticized by human rights organizations in India and abroad for its misuse. Over 600 individuals – including political leaders, activists, and ordinary citizens – have been detained in recent years, often just for voicing their opinions. Such actions silence democracy and spread fear, rather than freedom.

By detaining leaders like Mehraj Malik, the government is not only targeting individuals but also weakening public faith in democratic institutions. This must end.
