My life (and my young sons' life) has been upended by the traumatic impact of a natural disaster. In an already daunting situation, there's an additional frustration: the financial hold placed on my life by a co-owner of my assets. After receiving settlements from natural disaster coverage through EQC and insurance, I assumed I would be able to repurpose this money to rebuild my life and move forward. However, this has been forestalled by a co-owner who possesses 10% of these assets and refuses to reach an agreement that will enable the release of my equity.

Natural disaster victims must grapple with numerous issues, and dealing with insurance, EQC, and joint asset holders shouldn't exacerbate an already stressful situation. According to a report by the American Psychological Association, 80% of disaster survivors experience significant stress and anxieties related to their economic situation post-disaster (APA, 2012). My struggle is mirrored by thousands of others who are trapped in a similar situation.
