Release Kentucky State Student Aminata Seck From ICE Detention
The Issue
Aminata Seck was on her way to a basketball tournament with her Kentucky State University teammates when Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained her at the Louisville airport on August 7. She is 26 years old, a center on the KSU women's basketball team, and was named to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference Third Team just months before her arrest.
Since then, Seck has been shuffled between at least four detention facilities and is currently held at the Grayson County Detention Center in Leitchfield. According to attorney Sadiqa Reynolds, who is helping coordinate her case, Seck may have missed a student visa deadline because she was recovering from back surgery. Now she is also dealing with an ACL injury that needs surgery, and Reynolds says she has struggled to get consistent medical care, even something as basic as ice for the swelling.
"She needs surgery. She needs medical attention," Reynolds said. "Kentucky State has done what they can and now we must step up."
This is a student-athlete who followed the rules of school and sport, not someone who poses any danger to the public. Her coach, Amani Williams, has been advocating for her every step of the way, and her university and teammates want her home. A paperwork deadline missed during surgery should not mean weeks of detention transfers and denied medical treatment.
Kentucky State University, immigration officials, and the facilities holding Seck all have the power to make sure she gets the surgery she needs and a fair, timely review of her case. Sign the petition to demand Aminata Seck receive proper medical care and a swift resolution to her detention, before her injury and this ordeal cause any more lasting harm.
