Release Ghassan Najjar Immediately
The Issue
I call for the immediate and unconditional release of Ghassan Najjar, a prominent Palestinian community advocate from the village of Burin and grassroots organiser in the West Bank, who is currently being held by Israeli authorities in the Huwara military detention center near Nablus.
The Israel military invaded Burin at 3AM on Tuesday, October 27 before detaining 60 residents, forcibly seizing 3 Palestinian homes to use as interrogation centers while patrolling the village with armored jeeps and throwing stun grenades. They apprehended Ghassan from his home in the middle of the night, simply because he wanted to harvest olives on his own land and helped other Palestinian farmers do the same. Ghassan was assaulted by soldiers during the raid and sustained a heady injury, but there is no current information on his condition.
Ghassan is the co-founder of the Burin Land and Farming Cooperative, a Palestinian agricultural collective and grassroots workers' cooperative that promotes agroecology, food sovereignty, environmental justice and mutual aid in the face of Israeli military occupation. For years, he has organised creative direct actions, popular resistance initiatives and practical support for farmers, shepherds, students and other members of his community affected by settler violence, military repression and restrictions on access to agricultural land. He has also been married for four years and is the loving father Julia, his three-year-old daughter.
Over the past month, he has coordinated the olive harvest in the Nablus area on behalf of the Sumud Network as part of the Zaytoun2026 olive harvest campaign. Najjar has been subjected to repeated harassment and intimidation by the Israeli secret police, the Shin Bet, over his activism. In recent months, as preparations for the olive harvest season were underway, Shin Bet agents explicitly threatened to detain him if he continued organizing the harvest. Now he is being held indefinitely without charge or trial.
I therefore call for the immediate and unconditional release of Ghassan Najjar so that he can return to his family and community. Pending his release, I call to ensure he is treated humanely and protected from any form of torture and other ill-treatment.
Yours sincerely,
