Release Frankie the Capuchin Monkey From Pet Stop to a Sanctuary
The Issue
Frankie is a capuchin monkey who has lived inside Pet Stop, a pet store in Shawnee, Kansas, for 19 years. A primate sanctuary in Texas is ready to take him in. If the owners of Pet Stop say yes, Frankie could finally live the way a monkey should.
Frankie was bought as a baby. Ever since, his whole world has been an enclosure of roughly 10 feet. In all that time, he hasn't had the chance to climb a living tree, feel grass, or spend time with another of his kind.
Capuchins are smart, social animals. In the wild, they live in groups, bond closely with one another, and spend their days climbing and exploring. A store enclosure can't give Frankie any of that. He may have decades left to live. At the sanctuary, he would have far more room, new things to explore, and the chance to meet other monkeys.
Local advocates have spent more than a year protesting and writing letters asking Pet Stop to let him go. A billboard along Interstate 35 now makes the same plea, and supporters have sent more than 40,000 messages to the store and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Frankie has been at Pet Stop for nearly two decades. Saying yes to the sanctuary would give him a fuller life for the years he has left. It would also show the Shawnee community that a local business is willing to do right by him.
Sign the petition to ask Pet Stop to accept the sanctuary's offer and let Frankie retire, before he spends another year in a store.
