Dear supporters, the news of Clare’s passing is no less tragic despite there being an expectation this would be the sad outcome. It is of some comfort to know her loving family could be with her.
In line with the family's wishes of not releasing the body-cam footage publicly, as expressed in the media, I have updated the petition text. I don’t think it’s in anyone’s interest now for the public to view the footage, and at least now the police commissioner has done the right thing and faced up to what should have been automatically done days ago. Together, we have made an impact in calling for transparency and openness from the police.
Through this petition, I hoped to also raise awareness about where the failures occurred in Clare’s tragic story. Even yesterday I saw text online from a registered nurse who used the word ‘aggressive’ when she was talking about people living with dementia. The public needs to be reassured that people living with dementia are still the same person they always were. They don’t ‘become’ aggressive because they are diagnosed with dementia. This language is yet another failure in the public (and health professionals) perception and the stigma that surrounds dementia as a disease.
Thank you for joining this movement.
