The Issue

Ivan "Sergio" Chapparo has spent more than six years behind the counter at the Oceanview Diner on Fourth Street in Berkeley, working his way up to early morning shift supervisor. Last Friday, as he tried to board a flight to Las Vegas from a Bay Area airport, federal immigration agents took him into custody. He is now sitting in a detention facility, separated from the three children who depend on him.

Ivan isn't just a name on a case file — he's part of the daily rhythm of a neighborhood diner. His co-owner, Will Bishop, put it simply: "Very friendly and engaging personality. Good with customers, good with all people. Just one of those people you naturally want to talk to," according to KTVU. Regulars noticed the moment he stopped showing up. Friend Shawna Jones told KTVU his detention has "creat[ed] a lot of fear for the community," adding that "it's so close to home."

This kind of enforcement action, carried out at an airport gate rather than through the usual court process, leaves families and coworkers scrambling for information with almost no warning. Ivan's community shouldn't have to fight alone to bring him home, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should not detain a longtime, working father without a clear path to due process.

Ivan has spent years serving this community breakfast by breakfast. Now it's the community's turn to show up for him. Sign this petition to demand Ivan Chapparo's release and a fair hearing — before his kids lose more time with their father.
