The Issue

We, the residents of Rockwood are deeply concerned about the proposed zoning variance that would permit transitional housing near our local schools. Transitional housing can be a crucial resource for those in need; However, the location of such facilities should be carefully considered. We believe that placing them next to schools is not suitable due to potential risks involved. Studies have shown that proximity to such facilities can lead to increased crime rates and decreased property values (Source: Journal of Urban Economics). Moreover, it could potentially disrupt the learning environment due to increased noise and traffic. The proposed change in zoning would also grant the property owner unchecked authority to alter occupants without further permissions. According to Statistics Canada, Mississauga has seen a 27% increase in crime rates over the past five years (Statistics Canada, Crime Severity Index by City). Approving this proposal could potentially exacerbate this issue. We believe there are more suitable locations within our city for such a facility that would not directly impact school zones. Therefore, we urge the Committee of Adjustment to reject this application for variance in zoning laws near schools. Please sign this petition if you share these concerns and want your voice heard.
