As someone personally affected, I am deeply concerned about Texas House Bill 3399. It threatens to deprive millions of transgender children and adults of essential gender-affirming healthcare, thereby denying them the basic human right of health and dignity.

Studies consistently show that gender-affirming healthcare significantly improves the mental health and overall wellbeing of transgender individuals. The American Medical Association and World Professional Association for Transgender Health recognise this need and support the access to comprehensive care for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity. Yet, this bill threatens to push an already marginalized community further to the fringes.

Gender identity is not a choice, and healthcare should never be used as a tool for discrimination. Texas House Bill 3399, as currently written, stands to do just that – turn healthcare into a ground for discrimination and deny transgender individuals the compassionate and necessary care they need. We must not remain silent in the face of this infringement on basic human rights.
