The Issue

For decades, Ghana has been a land of immense wealth buried within its soil. Yet, the true beneficiaries of this wealth have rarely been its own people. As a proud Ghanaian, I have witnessed my beloved country remain underdeveloped while foreign corporations prosper excessively from our natural resources. It's a painful contradiction—our nation is rich in resources, yet its people see little of the prosperity these resources can bring. This recurring plight has often left us to grapple with unemployment, poverty, and a lack of infrastructure.

A prime example of this issue is the Goldfields Tarkwa mine. Although it represents one of the largest sources of gold in Ghana, the profits too often flow out of the country, benefiting shareholders abroad more than the communities that exist around these mines. The current lease for Goldfields expires in 2027, and a renewal would mean extending this cycle of inequity for another generation.

The upcoming decision about the renewal is crucial. We need to prioritize Ghanaian interests by not allowing the renewal of Goldfields' mining lease. Instead, we should focus on investing in our local industries and generating revenue that supports our people. This means empowering Ghanaian-owned companies to take charge of our resources, ensuring that our wealth is used for our development.

Moreover, allowing Goldfields to continue with another lease poses environmental risks that the communities around Tarkwa have been enduring for years. The land, once fertile, is being left barren, and the rivers that used to provide for our people are now tainted with pollutants that jeopardize health and livelihoods.

In many countries, mining operations are being scaled back to focus on sustainability and long-term growth for local communities. Ghana can lead by example in Africa by choosing a path that places its people first. To further our nation's interests, we need not only to reject the renewal of Goldfields’ Tarkwa mining lease but also actively engage in building a sustainable future through more equitable resource distribution and responsible environmental practices.

This is a call to action for all Ghanaians, home and abroad, and all sympathizers of our cause to stand united in the fight for our nation’s prosperity. For our sake and that of future generations, the time has come to end the complacency. We need to take firm and committed steps towards a brighter and self-reliant Ghana.

Sign this petition to urge the President of Ghana, the Parliament, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, and the Minerals Commission to reject the renewal of Goldfields’ Tarkwa mining lease and to adopt policies that put the interests of the Ghanaian people at the forefront.
