Our community is facing an unnerving prospect and we need you to take action. A hard money lending company is looking to rezone an existing piece of land from Agricultural to PUD, which allows for placement of anything from a commercial business to a large multifamily complex in an area that cannot accommodate such development.

The company seeks to rezone the 13 acres of land located directly behind Lake Travis Elementary School to a PUD that allows for construction of a multifamily complex.  see 24-10-02 15115 Kollmeyer- Zoning Change on Lakeway Public Notices

A multifamily complex in this area would exacerbate a traffic situation that already borders on chaos during school drop-off and pick-up times, endangering hundreds of our schoolchildren — many of whom cross Kollmeyer Drive on foot and riding on bicycles from nearby neighborhoods. Parents and school bus drivers know all too well how backed up the light on Kollmeyer Drive gets in the morning and afternoon rush. Already it requires a police presence to manage. A multifamily complex using this same road for access will create an absolutely unsafe and unmanageable situation.

Another significant consideration is that the proposed development would be in the flood zone that feeds the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve and Lake Austin. It will not only place residents of the new development in a potentially unsafe situation but would also impact our natural resources in what could only be a negative way. Imagine trash from dumpsters in a large development flowing directly into our treasured green spaces anytime a heavy rain occurs.

This petition is not about resisting change. But we have seen enough development in this area for the foreseeable future. We already have large apartment complexes going in on Bee Caves Parkway, near Hudson Bend Middle School and Lakeway Elementary. We have not yet seen the significant traffic increase these developments will place upon our already strained 620. Enough is enough. We all have a voice, and we need to use it now.

The City of Lakeway Zoning and Planning Commission provided us 13 days of notice before the Public Hearing, which will be held at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, October 2nd at Lakeway City Hall: 1102 Lohmans Crossing Rd.

Support us in ensuring our children's safety, protecting the integrity of our natural environment, and preserving our neighborhood's character from an intrusive, high-density development. Please plan to attend the October 2nd meeting if at all possible.

In-person attendance makes the most impact. If you cannot attend, please voice your concerns by filing a public comment on the Lakeway City Council Portal.  To do so:

  1. Click Here to open the City Council portal
  2. Click Create, under the Public Comment Form section
  3. Select Zoning and Planning Commission for the meeting date
  4. Select No for the "I am in support of this item" question
  5. Enter 24-10-02 15115 Kollmeyer- Zoning Change for the agenda item question
  6. Add other concerns you may have and then click Submit

In addition to the above actions, please sign and share this petition to spread awareness of the proposed rezoning on Kollmeyer Drive.
