The Issue

On May 1, 2025, the Calgary Subdivision & Development Appeal Board will hear the merits and opposition to the proposed Jayman Development of 9 buildings over 4 phases. The proposed development includes 5 towers with 16 floors each and 3 towers with 7 floors each, with the proposed development creating about 957 units to be occupied by singles to families. This is an influx of thousands of people in Mahogany. Many of these units may even be used as rental properties which Jayman has stated to residents of Westman Village.

There has been much discussion on the Facebook groups for Mahogany about resident's opposition to this development but there were less than 5 residents on the call today to voice opposition by being included for the upcoming hearing. We need to come together as a community to voice the concern we are expressing in the social media sphere for the Appeal Board to hear loud and clear and to understand that the Mahogany residents are in adamant opposition to the Jayman development which has been doubled in size since it was initially proposed.

Jayman has hired a Global Law Firm to represent them in this appeal to the proposed Jayman development. The lawyer has proposed a full day worth of submissions. The appellant to this matter, the person who is fighting against the development, is one single resident who has proposed 15 minutes worth of material to present to make her case against the development. The voice representing Jayman will speak to the merits of the project for almost a full day with experts in support of this project.

Two residents opposing this development are not enough voices in the room to counteract the hours of submissions by Jayman's lawyer and experts. The Board will decide the merits of the appeal to reject the development based on the submissions of each party and it is hard to persuade a board when the opposition to the proposed development is spoken to for less than 30 minutes by two residents compared to a lawyer, trained in persuading boards to his client position, Jayman's development, who will speak to it's merits over the course of a full day.

This petition is a way to help bring the voices of our community together to present to the board on May 1, in anticipated absence of community attendance on the virtual call. Please consider joining the virtual hearing and putting voice to your opposition by emailing info@calgarysdab.ca or at a minimum, please sign this petition to show your opposition which attendees can use to support their opposition to to proposed enlarged development. You can join the hearing by adding yourself to the Teams call here: www.calgarysdab.ca/active-appeals.html

Just to be clear, the goal of the appellant on this matter is to reduce the size of the development from 16 storeys to 7 and the 7 storeys to 4/5 as this was the proposed relief sought by this person.

All of the information related to the appeal submitted is accessible to the public here and is worth a read to inform yourself about the drastic change to our neighbourhood: https://publicaccess.calgary.ca/lldm01/exccpa?func=ccpa.general&msgID=PTsrerrTreK&msgAction=Download
