The Issue

We, the undersigned, call on U.S. District Judge Stephen V. Wilson to reject the outrageous and unprecedented post-trial plea deal offered to former L.A. County Sheriff’s Deputy Trevor Kirk.

Kirk was convicted by a jury of felony civil rights violations for violently throwing an unarmed woman to the ground and pepper-spraying her while she filmed him. The evidence was clear, the trial was fair, and the verdict was just.

But now, a new U.S. Attorney has intervened to offer a sweetheart deal that would reduce Kirk’s felony conviction to a misdemeanor—after the trial. This would allow him to:

Regain his right to own a firearm
Potentially return to law enforcement
Escape full accountability for his abuse of power

Multiple federal prosecutors resigned in protest of this deal, citing its damage to public trust and justice. We demand Judge Wilson uphold the original verdict and sentence Kirk accordingly.

Justice should not be undone behind closed doors. We urge the court: Reject the plea deal. Honor the jury system. Protect civil rights.
