Dear relatives, siblings and members of the Organization of American States,
As Indigenous Peoples, as Tribal Peoples, and particularly as Indigenous women, we wish to convey our profound concerns regarding the candidacy of Albert Ramdin for the role of Secretary General at the Organization of American States (OAS). The need for a representative who genuinely advocates for our cause, has deep respect for our rights and who upholds international law, is critically important to us.
Albert Ramdin, unfortunately, already faces opposition because of his prior acts. His handling of the Pikin Saron case stands as a glaring symbol of his controversial approach. His false allegations about the Indigenous Peoples and the misrepresentation of the sitiuation have underlined our worries.
Today, we want to bring this issue into the public spotlight. Albert Ramdin should not become the Secretary General of the OAS. The person who holds this position should have an unwavering commitment to respecting the rights of indigenous peoples and upholding international norms. To allow someone who has in the past neglected his duties and responsibilities in this respect, is a step we must not take.
We are aware of the ongoing breach of Suriname of the IACHR verdicts since 2007, which which adds to our fears of institutionalized lack of accountability, potential power abuse, and disrespect for rule of law if Ramdin assumes the esteemed position.
We believe the Secretary General's role is crucial in ensuring the unity and justice we all strive for. Unfortunately, Ramdin's actions have proven he may not uphold these values. And therefore, we as Indigenous women, mothers, sisters we don't feel safe if you approve this. 8th of March, it's International Women's day. Don't let Pacha Mama down!
By denying Albert Ramdin's candidacy for the role of Secretary General of the OAS, you send a strong message that the rule of law, the respect for Indigenous Peoples' rights, and the principles of democratic accountability are paramount in guiding OAS’s actions.
This is a call for all who believe in the power of a transparent, just, and accountable OAS to raise their voices - let us collectively declare: Do not approve Ramdin as Secretary General of OAS.
We will bring this petition to the members of the Organization of American States (OAS)....
Blessings,
