This is the time of Tamil Genocide Education Week Act!  This is the time according to the Tamil Genocide Education week Act, 2021, that Ontarians are encouraged to educate themselves about the “Tamil Genocide” and other genocides!

As part of your supervision of your children’s schoolwork this week, please pay attention to this subject and here are some guidelines to assist with the positive discussion with your children or grand-children.

Key Points in the Discussions with the School

1.       The Act is factually incorrect and is currently being contested in the Ontario courts

a.       The Act was not vetted by an unbiased source prior to being passed. It was introduced by a Tamil MPP who has been an open supporter of the LTTE.

b.       The Government of Canada has officially released a statement saying that they do not recognize this alleged genocide because there is no evidence to support it.  More information can be obtained via:
Office of the Director General for South Asia, Global Affairs Canada,  125 Sussex Drive Ottawa, K1A 0G2  Phone 343-543-1825

a.       Only the UN and ICC can make a declaration of a genocide, and they have not done so because there is no evidence of a genocide.

b.      What happened in Sri Lanka on May 18th was the end of a 30-year conflict between the Government of SL (who include and represent the Tamil people) against the terrorist organization the LTTE. The death toll in the conflict, which was worsened by the LTTE using Tamil people as human shields, cannot be equated to a genocide. In fact, UN reports show that the Government of Sri Lanka rescued closed to 300,000 people from the war zone and temporarily settled them in refugee camps. These people have now been resettled in their homes and livelihood and infrastructure development projects have been underway since the conclusion of the war.

c.       Things are not perfect right now in SL, but there is NO ethnic conflicts. People are united to create a better Sri Lanka, a peaceful Sri Lanka.

2.       Adopting the Act will violate the school policy of maintaining an equitable and non-discriminatory

a.       This Act choses to only recognize the Tamil lives that were lost during the ethnic conflict.

b.      The Act ignores the ethnic cleansing campaign carried out against the Sinhalese and Muslims by the LTTE.

c.       The Act is essentially placing value of the lives of one ethnic group (Tamil) over any other ethnic group residing in Sri Lanka.

d.      The Act unjustly attacks and vilifies the Sinhalese Buddhists.

3.       The school has a responsibility to ensure that the materials taught are factually correct

a.       We are not standing in the way of the school teaching the history of Sri Lanka. All we ask is that it is done correctly, and not with the truth being distorted to satisfy the agenda of the pro-LTTE groups that support this Bill.

b.      The Act states that there is an on-going genocide of Tamil people in Sri Lanka. This cannot be further from the truth. In Sri Lanka people live, work and pray side by side. Even now, during the current economic crisis, all ethnic groups have come together and are campaigning together to bring about change.

c.       The schools should ensure that history is taught in a way that brings about peace and learning. The lies of Bill 104 will only create a conflict between the Sri Lankan community residing in Canada.

d.      There can be no reconciliation without truth. The school has a responsibility to always teach the truth.

4.       The Act has been designed to weaponize education

a.       The Act will divide the classroom by teaching hateful lies as facts.

b.      Already we have been school boards releasing content related to this Act in children’s classrooms where they glorify and justify the actions of the LTTE – a terrorist organization banned by Canada and 31 other countries.

5.       Given the controversial nature of this Bill we ask that the schools include an unbiased group when vetting the content that is developed and released. Furthermore, we ask that we be told in advance the materials being taught in the classroom so that we can decide if our children will participate in the programs.
