Reject Stage 1 - Save Bondi Pavilion

At the end of last year Waverley Council decided to do their Pavilion 'upgrade' in stages. Now Stage 1 has proceeded to a Development Application (DA) without community consultation or discussion about this approach or the scope of the works.
It makes no economic or planning sense to begin renovations without a complete plan.
Mayor Sally Betts and Waverley Council have already wasted millions of dollars of ratepayers money commissioning consultants and architects aimed at commercialising our only community centre.
The project budget has blown out from $9.5 million to $38 million and is now more than $45 million and climbing - a shameless mismanagement of ratepayer funds.
Save Bondi Pavilion strongly supports an immediate and much-needed upgrade to Bondi Pavilion. This has always been our position.
As a result of the community campaign to Save Bondi Pavilion as a community and cultural centre, the Stage 1 plan reflects some of our concerns and we celebrate that success.
But the Stage 1 plan still has many flaws including the loss of the courtyard space for festivals and the popular Bucket List. These plans cannot be supported in their current form - especially without plans for the remaining stages.
The ill-conceived and expensive glass box into the Southern Courtyard is still under consideration. What will happen upstairs? Do they still plan to throw out the community and hand it over to commercial interests? Will the music studios and High Tide Room in the Southern Courtyard be demolished?
No wonder the community is suspicious about Council’s intentions.
It is irresponsible of Mayor Betts and Waverley Council to lodge a DA for Stage 1 without any information publicly available for later stages. We must continue to apply pressure until Mayor Betts unveils her plans for the top floor and southern courtyard.
The process to date stinks — it has been shrouded in secrecy, sneakiness and an unwillingness by Council to be honest with its own ratepayers.
Waverley Council has a responsibility to upgrade Bondi Pavilion as a community and cultural centre. Bondi Pavilion has been neglected by Council for the past decade.
