Reject Prologis data centre proposal for Lisgar
The Issue
UPDATE: this petition is now closed and I would like to ask that you sign the Stop the Data Centre @ Lisgar GO petition instead as the City of Mississauga does not accept change.org petitions. Also, please take a moment to sign the moratorium petition lead by Ward 2's Alvin Tedjo.
I'm deeply concerned about the proposal for a data centre on Lisgar's vacant land on Tenth Line West. This development, spearheaded by Prologis, is situated right at the heart of our community in the Meadowvale Business Park, just south of Highway 401, on the border with Halton Region.
The construction of a data centre in this strategic location poses significant environmental and economic risks. Data centres are notorious for their massive water consumption, often hundreds of thousands of gallons daily, primarily used for cooling purposes. This water is sourced from our municipal system, the very same one that serves countless households in our area. With increased demand from a massive facility vying for the same resources, there is a looming threat of escalated water rates and strained supply, especially during peak periods of residential usage.
Beyond these immediate concerns, the establishment of a data centre could disrupt the local ecosystem. Lisgar, Meadowvale and its surrounding regions are home to diverse wildlife and green spaces that contribute to the community's charm and ecological balance. We should prioritize conserving these spaces for future generations instead of despoiling them with industrial developments.
While data centres might create jobs, the long-term economic benefit often leans towards the operators rather than the community at large. The high energy demands, coupled with possible increases in real estate prices, could ultimately deter small businesses and hinder local economic growth. Additionally, Prologis has not provided full public disclosure of generator count, fuel type, noise projections at residential property lines, water consumption, electrical capacity and tenant identity. This clearly demonstrates a lack of proper assessment to understand the impact on our community.
We must urge our city and Councillor Martin Reid to reconsider and ultimately reject this proposal. Our community's long-term welfare and our environment must take precedence over short-term gains. Let us advocate for alternatives that align with our environmental goals and support sustainable growth in our community.
Please join me in standing against this development. Sign this petition to protect Lisgar and Meadowvale communities and ensure our shared resources are preserved for future generations.
Support is by attending the community meeting on Thursday, June 25 at 6 p.m. at the Erin Meadows Community Centre.
