Reject plans for a data center in Rochelle, Illinois

Reject plans for a data center in Rochelle, Illinois
The Issue
Living in Rochelle, Illinois, a small town known for its close-knit community and beautiful natural surroundings, I am deeply concerned about the proposed plans to build a data center here. Being a resident, I have witnessed firsthand how decisions like these can significantly impact our lives both economically and health-wise. The potential approval of this development could have far-reaching consequences for our town and its people.
Rochelle Municipal Utilities (RMU) does not generate its electricity. Instead, it relies on negotiating bulk delivery rates from suppliers. This means that although RMU does not directly foot the bill for the infrastructure to support a data center, the financial burden will invariably shift to surrounding towns and communities. Ultimately, this could lead to higher rates in Rochelle when the current contracts are up for renewal. Is it fair for us to bear this additional cost?
Beyond economic concerns, there are substantial health risks associated with such an endeavor. Industrial activities linked with data centers have been noted to contribute significantly to rising health issues, including asthma and cancer. It's alarming to note that similar ventures in other areas have led to marked increases in these conditions, according to environmental health studies. Our community's health and well-being should never be sacrificed for corporate gains.
It's crucial that we take a stand against this proposal and protect our beloved town from unnecessary harm. The cost savings purported by hosting a data center are overshadowed by the risks and long-term undesired consequences it poses. Our voices, as residents of this town, must be heard and considered by those making these decisions.
Please join me in rejecting the plans for a data center in Rochelle, Illinois. Sign this petition to let our authorities know that we value our community's health and the financial stability of our towns more than a short-term economic gain. Together, we can protect the integrity and future of Rochelle.
