Westgate, Ward 41 residents face an urgent issue: a proposed surface car park at Stand 1129, Adylin Township (1129 Acacia Road, Bluffhill, Harare), currently a residential area, could disrupt our community.

This application, submitted to the Harare City Council under Section 26(3) of the Regional Town and Country Planning Act [Chapter 29:12] of 1996, seeks to rezone an area measuring 6,855 m² to accommodate a parking and staging facility for heavy haulage trucks. This facility is unsuitable for a low-density residential zone, raising concerns for our community's health, safety, and welfare.

For residents who cherish the tranquility and residential nature of Westgate, the introduction of a heavy haulage truck facility is alarming. The substantial increase in industrial activity will degrade our quality of life, increase noise pollution, and pose safety risks, especially to the children who play in our streets. Our community infrastructure is ill-equipped to handle the wear and tear heavy trucks would bring.

The potential environmental impact is also significant. Heavy trucks emit pollutants that will compromise our air quality and contribute to the deterioration of our roads and surroundings. Residents must contend with increased air and noise pollution, which studies have shown can lead to significant health issues, including respiratory diseases and cardiovascular problems.

Furthermore, this proposal contradicts the current zoning laws designed to protect residential spaces. We implore the Harare City Council to adhere to these laws and uphold our community’s rights and expectations. A shift from residential to industrial use could set a dangerous precedent.

We urge the Harare City Council to deny the permit application for this car park. By protecting our zoning regulations, we safeguard our community's health, peace, and safety. We need the support of residents and allies to prevent this unsuitable industrial intrusion in our neighborhood.
