No new taxes! On July 20, 2026, the Greenwood Common Council unanimously passed a new municipal wheel tax and vehicle excise surtax, pending signature by Mayor Mark Myers. This means starting January 1, 2027, standard passenger vehicle owners will be forced to shell out an additional $25 annually, while those with larger vehicles such as RVs, semis, and buses will see a $40 annual fee. This increased financial burden comes at a time when many of us in Greenwood are already struggling to make ends meet.

The impact of this tax will hit hardest on individuals and families who are already financially stretched. It will disproportionally affect working-class families and small business owners who rely on vehicles for their daily activities or operations. With inflation and living costs already straining budgets, the last thing the residents of Greenwood need is another mandatory levy that erodes their financial autonomy.

Moreover, transparency around the usage and necessity of these funds has been lacking. There must be clear accountability regarding how this tax will be utilized effectively to benefit the community. Without concrete plans or explanations, residents shouldn't be expected to provide more money under unclear pretenses.
